Prince's Album Free?

Singer song writer Prince has been under fire because of his decision to give away Copies of his Planet Earth CD, these CD’s will be given a way with the Sunday Mail which is a London Newspaper . Due to Prince’s decision his record label Sony BMG have said they have no plans to release the album under their label. Why would Prince do this , some speculate that he is looking for much fan support and others think he has lost it. But more important than why he is doing it is what it will do to his career. Others are saying that by his doing this will sever his ties with a lot of record companies.

While the album does belong to Prince, while he is under contract the record company would normally set a release date for the CD but Prince has decided alone to go ahead and do this great act for fans. This will have a huge impact on Prince’s career in the future. Some people are saying that record stores will no longer carry his records even for future releases. He now has to find a future record company and he may have trouble doing that. Record companies put out these record because they make money and with Prince giving away an estimated 2 million copies ( which remains to be see) it takes away millions of dollars from the record companies.

Others in the industry may not wish to work with Prince in the future because they can’t be sure that it won’t happen unless a very strict contract is put into place. Maybe if Prince opens his own record label and puts out his own records he may have some luck. As far as his fans goes, they could not be happier.
